Diamond Color

Diamond Color System

Color is one of the four main criteria in determining the value of a diamond. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has developed a grading system that is accepted worldwide as the standard by which to determine diamond color.

The scale is only for what are commonly referred to as white diamonds. It runs alphabetically from D through Z, going from clear by degrees of yellow up toward light brown. Categories A, B, and C are assumed not to exist. However, those slots are being left open just in case something extraordinary does show up.

D, E, F – Virtually colorless

G, H, I, J – Nearly colorless

K, L, M – Faintly tinted yellow

N, O, P, Q, R – Lightly yellow tinted.
Tint can be seen with the naked eye

S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z – Tinted. Readily seen even when
                                    mounted. Might progress to brownish.

Beyond Z, we get into what is known as "Fancies". These are diamonds ranging in color from champagne to vivid red. These are extremely rare and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for a small stone. Generally, as the amount of yellow increases, the value of the stone drops roughly 10 – 15% per grade – until we hit the fancies.
